The Prime Minister of the Netherlands made it very clear today that he wishes Islam critic Ayaan Hirsi Ali would just go away.

AMSTERDAM — Dutch Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende said on Friday he did not think much of the contribution of outspoken MP Ayaan Hirsi Ali to the debate about the Danish cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed.

Speaking in Berlin on Thursday, Hirsi Ali said she wished Balkenende had as much courage as Danish Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen. Hirsi Ali said publishing the cartoons is a matter of freedom of expression.

Rasmussen has consistently refused to apologise to Muslims on behalf of the Danish newspaper that first printed the 12 caricatures of the Prophet Mohammed. He contends his government has no control over the free press.

The Dutch media asked Balkenende during his weekly press conference on Friday about Hirsi Ali’s comments. He was initially reluctant to talk about the issue. When pressed, he said “I wonder whether this will help the debate in the Netherlands.

The Prime Minister also said “we don’t have much use” for Hirsi Ali’s contribution.

(via Always on Watch)
"Sculpture banned from the Venice Biennale

"A sculpture by German artist Gregor Schneider was banned from the 51st Venice Biennale because the event’s organisers said it might be offensive to Muslims. The sculpture was a 15-metre-high cube covered in black fabric modelled after the Ka’ba in Mecca and was set to be displayed in St. Mark’s Square. A spokesman for the Venetian arts authority said there was a danger that Muslims would feel provoked by the work, heightening the risk of the city being vulnerable to terrorist attacks. Schneider insisted that the artwork was not meant as a provocation. He said he wanted to symbolise a connection between European and Arab cultures. The organisers tried to place the sculpture at another site, but finally decided not to display it at all. Instead, Schneider showed a video explaining his failed attempt."

From the Danish daily newspaper Ekstra-Bladet here :

"The American professor Claudia Kiburz has been fired from her teaching position at Sheikj Zayed University in Dubai for having distributed copies to her students ofCartoon_protests_060_gaza the Mohammad cartoons published by Jyllands-Posten, so that they could discuss the issue. That provoked complaints, however, whereupon she was fired, according to her colleagues who do not want to reveal their names. Kiburz taught English at the university which is exclusively for women. Local newspapers report that it was sheikh Nahayan bin Mubarak, minister of education in the United Arab Emirates and president of the university, who fired Kiburz." hat tip expat Swede.

Our slogan will be 'no violence' and we appeal for calm and peace," Zoubouer Hachani, a spokesman for the Al Qods mosque, told reporters Friday. The event is to take place in front of McGill University's downtown campus on Saturday afternoon. Protesters will not march by the Danish consulate as originally planned.

A Montreal police spokesman said Friday they will have extra officers on duty, as per usual with protests, and will block streets in the area to control traffic and the crowd. A coalition of 50 other Muslim groups had appealed to organizers to cancel the demonstration out of fear tensions could spill over as they have elsewhere.

AROUND 200 mainly Muslim protesters marched to the Danish Embassy in Venezuela's capital Caracas today and burnt a Danish and an American flag, as protests over cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed spread to Latin America.

The demonstrators left a prayer session at a Caracas mosque and marched together, chanting in Arabic, to the embassy where they doused a Danish and an American flag with petrol and set them alight on the building's steps.

It was the first such demonstration in Latin America in a sweeping global protest over the cartoons that has brought tens of thousands of Muslims to the streets from Jakarta to Nairobi, killing at least 11 people so far.

The drawings, considered blasphemous by many Muslims, were first published in a Danish newspaper, but have since appeared in a number of other publications around the world.

"This is a peaceful march so that people don't keep picking on Muslim people," said Elias Antonio, a young Venezuelan protester sporting a red baseball cap.

That was easy to forecast: German novelist and Nobel laureate Guenter Grass, a prominent left-wing critic of the USA ever since the Vietnam war, blasts the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten for the publication of the Mohammad cartoons:

"This was a conscious and planned provocation by a right-wing Danish newspaper," said German Guenter Grass, who took the Nobel Prize in 1999.

Grass described the Danish publishers of the caricatures as "xenophobic right-wing radicals" and the subsequent violent Muslim protests as "a fundamentalist response to a fundamentalist act."

"Where does the West take that arrogance to impose what must and must not be done?" Grass asked, stressing the relativity of the freedom of opinion in the West where the media are controlled by conglomerates "monopolizing the public opinion."

Poor Muslim extremists ... they had to respond (burning houses, issuing death threats, etc., etc.) to a fundamentalistic act (publishing cartoons).

I never looked at it this way, but 9/11 probably was just a fundamentalist response - a bit rough, maybe - to a fundamentalistic act of "the West". For the moment I can't come up with one, but I'm sure Guenter Grass can help us out...

Publicar unas caricaturas: fundamentalista.

I was going to respond to the email I posted in the wee hours, but decided to wait till the morning. Now I don't have to. Charles Krauthammer has. Money quote:

"A true Muslim moderate is one who protests desecrations of all faiths. Those who don't are not moderates but hypocrites, opportunists and agents for the rioters, merely using different means to advance the same goal: to impose upon the West, with its traditions of freedom of speech, a set of taboos that is exclusive to the Islamic faith. These are not defenders of religion but Muslim supremacists trying to force their dictates upon the liberal West.

And these "moderates" are aided and abetted by Western "moderates" who publish pictures of the Virgin Mary covered with elephant dung and celebrate the "Piss Christ" (a crucifix sitting in a jar of urine) as art deserving public subsidy, but who are seized with a sudden religious sensitivity when the subject is Muhammad. "

I have to say that the performance of the British and American media this past week has made me sad to be a journalist. The main objective of those editors has been sensitivity; the last imperative has been giving readers the information we need to understand the world around us. If you want to know why newspapers are struggling, you just found out.

y la llamada "la sumisión se extiende":

Michelle Malkin has a round-up of various governments now censoring portrayal of Muhammad. Canada, Ukraine, Malaysia, Yemen, Sweden, and South Africa are among the beacons of appeasement. The EU is mulling a new media guideline to conform with the demands of Hezbollah. The editor who commissioned the cartoons has been sent on an indefinite leave. In America and Britain, the government does not need to censor the press. The press is only too willing to do what the Islamists want, without any prodding from the government. It's amazing how quickly the Jihadists have succeeded in intimidating the West into giving up critical freedoms in a matter of days. Now, wait till they have a nuke.

"You know that those cartoons were published for the 1st time months ago and we here in the Middle East have tonnes of jokes about Allah, the prophets and the angels that are way more offensive, funny and obscene than those poorly-made cartoons, yet no one ever got shot for telling one of those jokes or at least we had never seen rallies and protests against those infidel joke-tellers.

What I want to say is that I think the reactions were planned to be exaggerated this time by some Middle Eastern regimes and are not mere public reaction. And I think Syria and Iran have the motives to trigger such reactions in order to get away from the pressures applied by the international community on those regimes." - the indispensable Omar, at Iraq the Model.

According to Dagens Nyheter, the Swedish security services (Säpo),
Which translates directly to “The Security Police” or, in Romanian “Securitate”, German “STASI”, Russian “KGB” or even older German “Gestapo”…
in collusion with Foreign Minister Leila Freivalds, have forced the website SD-Kuriren offline for publishing the Jyllands-Posten cartoons (SD-Kuriren is the house organ of the hard-right Swedish Democrats).
“We think that this was the best decision after we were contacted by the Foreign Ministry and Säpo,” Anna Larsson, vice president of hosting compant Levonline, told DN. Freivalds told DN that “it is terrible that a small group of extremists are exposing Swedes to danger [by reprinting the cartoons].”

Noticia encontrada en The Anti-Idiotarian Rottweiler.
The website belongs to a small, nationalist party, the Swedish Democrats, with  deep roots in Sweden's violent 1980s neo-Nazi movemement. Their very existence - and the fact that they have seats in more than 20 local legislatures - is bad enough. Now they will become martyrs of freedom of speech and possibly catapult into the national parliament in the elections in September.

The big daily morning newspaper Dagens Nyheter reports that the government ordered the website shut down because they want to prevent violence against Swedes in the Middle East, as well as islamist terror attacks on Swedish soil. (One such attack was narrowly averted in December.)

"'It is terrible that a small group of Swedish extremists are exposing Swedes to clear and present danger' says foreign minister Mrs. Laila Freivalds. The closing of the websites of the Swedish Democrats and their news magazine followed the news magazine's publication of one Muhammad cartoon. 'We thought it was the best thing to do after the security police and foreign ministry had contacted us' said Anna Larsson, vice president of the website host Levonline. /.../

'We have been in contact with the internet provider and presented our threat assessment to them. What that assessment looks like is secret' says Mr. Klas Bergenstrand, chief of the security police. /.../

Mr. Peter Danowsky, attorney and expert on freedom of speech and theb press, does not consider the actions of the security police and the foreign ministry to be of any concern. 'If the security police and the foreign ministry think that there is a threat and then relays that to the website host, then they are doing them a favor' he says. /.../

Several media in the Middle East have, according to Mrs. Freivalds, reported that 'a major Swedish newspaper' has published a Muhammad caricature cartoon. 'We know that there are extremists among muslims who will not be satisfied with staging demonstrations, but who take to violence - and it is from that perspective that we assess that there is a threat' says Mrs. Freivalds."

Carter, who monitored last week’s Palestinian elections in which Hamas handily toppled the ruling Fatah, added that the United States should not cut off aid to the Palestinian people, but rather funnel it through third parties like the U.N.
If you sponsor an election or promote democracy and freedom around the world, then when people make their own decision about their leaders, I think that all the governments should recognize that administration and let them form their government,” Carter said.
If there are prohibitions — like, for instance, in the United States, against giving any money to a government that is controlled by Hamas — then the United States could channel the same amount of money to the Palestinian people through the United Nations, through the refugee fund, through UNICEF, things of that kind,” he added.
Carter expressed hope that “the people of Palestine — who already suffer … under Israeli occupation…– will not suffer because they are deprived of a right to pay their school teachers, policemen, welfare workers, health workers and provide food for people.”
As president, Carter brokered a 1979 peace accord between Israel and Egypt at Camp David. That effort helped earn him the Nobel Peace Prize.
Carter said “there’s a good chance” that Hamas, which has operated a network of successful social and charitable organizations for Palestinians, could become a nonviolent organization.
However, Carter noted, Hamas has adhered to a cease-fire since August 2004, which “indicates what they might do in the future.”
He said Hamas is “highly disciplined” and capable of keeping any promise of nonviolence it might make.

Two men have been charged over separate incidents of allegedly sending threatening emails to radio talkback hosts following the Cronulla riot. Detectives from Strike Force Enoggera, investigating the December riot and subsequent revenge attacks, today arrested a 19-year-old man during a raid on a home in McGirr Parade, Warwick Farm, during which they also seized a home computer. The man was taken to Liverpool police station and charged with using a carriage service (the email system) to make threats and a second offence of using a carriage service to menace, harass and offend. He was refused bail to appear at Liverpool Local Court later today.

A second man also was arrested today for allegedly sending threatening emails to another radio talkback host in December. The 21-year-old was arrested at his home in Emmet Street, Callala Bay, near Nowra and police also seized a computer for forensic examination. The man was taken to Nowra police station and charged with one offence of using a carriage service to threaten serious harm and a second offence of using a carriage service to menace, harass and offend. Police will allege the man sent two threatening emails from his home computer. He was granted conditional bail to appear at Nowra Local Court on March 13, 2006.

De The Sydney Morning Herald (via A Western Heart)
The Indonesian military is using the same tactics of terror in West Papua that were employed during its bloody reign in East Timor, and Australia should step in to mediate a peace settlement, warns separatist Herman Wainggai. Mr Wainggai, the leader of the 43 asylum-seekers who arrived in Australia two weeks ago, said ongoing abuses by the Indonesian military, often in cahoots with militias, were terrifying the indigenous community. "It's the same as with East Timor," he told the Herald yesterday from Christmas Island, where the asylum-seekers are being processed by immigration officials. "They have created militias and jihadis in West Papua. The people, and especially activists for independence, are very scared." The military and police regularly raided campuses and villages searching for independence sympathisers, while Indonesia's intelligence network kept constant tabs on their activities, Mr Wainggai said.
Jailed twice for his political activism, Mr Wainggai said he had no faith in the promise by the Indonesian President, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, that, if they returned home, the Papuans would face no reprisals. Many such promises had been made in the past, he said, and bitter experience meant they could not be accepted at face value. "We don't trust Indonesia," he said. "If I was sent back to Indonesia, I would die. The Government and the military treats West Papuans like animals. They have killed us like animals."

A Muslim schoolgirl refused to wear school uniform because she was not prepared to dress in the same clothes as "non-believers", Britain's highest civil court was told yesterday.
Five law lords were hearing an appeal by Denbigh High School, Luton, against an earlier ruling that Shabina Begum, 17, had been denied the right to manifest her religion under Article 9 of the Human Rights Convention.
She was sent home in September 2002 when she insisted on wearing a jilbab, a full-length Islamic gown that hides the shape of a woman's arms and legs. At that time, nearly 80 per cent of the school's pupils were Muslim.

Muslim scholars who gathered for an emergency meeting have called for changes to the law to stop images of the Prophet Muhammad being published.
Members of the Muslim Action Committee (MAC) who met in Birmingham called for changes to the Race Relations Act and the Press Complaints Commission code.
They are to stage a protest march in London on 18 February, expected to attract 20,000 to 50,000 people....
Shaikh Faiz Saddiqi, who chaired the meeting, said Wednesday's gathering of about 300 Islamic religious leaders was the largest meeting of its kind he knew of in his 25 years of living in the UK....
Mr Saddiqi said they had concluded they wanted the Race Relations Act modified to give Muslims the same protection as Sikhs or Jews.
He also said the Press Complaints Commission code of conduct should be tightened to prevent publication of any images of Muhammad, but added the clerics accepted criticism and discussion of Islam should be allowed.
He said the code was a voluntary code to ensure the media treated people with respect and called for that respect to be shown to Muslims, whose religion forbids any pictorial depiction of Muhammad....
"Enough is enough, we have to get back to being a civil society.
"What kicks can you get out of seeing this caricature, except to insult the Prophet of Islam?"
He praised the UK media for not publishing the cartoons.

A mass demonstration of 100,000 Muslims will take place in London next weekend as anger continues over publication of cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed.
The Muslim Action Committee, an umbrella group which claims to represent more than a million Muslims, said it would do as much as it could to prevent the ugly scenes seen last week when protesters carried placards issuing death threats and one man dressed as a suicide bomber.
But they said they needed to "channel" growing anger felt by communities across Britain that Muslims were being persecuted and made to feel like "second class citizens".
Faiz Saddiqi, the committee convener, said: "It is a peaceful protest. We will not let it be hijacked by the fringe elements.
"It is a way of showing the depth of anger that Muslim communities feel about being continually insulted by the publication of these images."
Omar Bakri Mohammed, the radical Muslim cleric, has said the cartoonist behind caricatures of the Prophet Mohammed that have sparked outrage across the Arab world should be tried and executed under Islamic law.
The cleric said the cartoonist had insulted Islam and must pay the price, as three people were killed during protests against the cartoons in Afghanistan.
"The insult has been established now by everybody, Muslim and non-Muslim, and everybody condemns the cartoonist and condemns the cartoon," he told BBC Radio 4's Today programme.
"However, in Islam, God said, and the messenger Mohammed said, whoever insults a prophet, he must be punished and executed.
"This man should be put on trial and if it is proven to be executed."
QALAT, Afghanistan - Police killed four people Wednesday as Afghans enraged over drawings of the Prophet Muhammad marched on a U.S. military base in a volatile southern province, directing their anger not against Europe but America.
The U.S. base was targeted because the United States "is the leader of Europe and the leading infidel in the world," said Sher Mohammed, a 40-year-old farmer who suffered a gunshot wound while taking part in the demonstration in the city of Qalat.
"They are all the enemy of Islam. They are occupiers in our country and must be driven out," Mohammed said.
Wednesday's violence began when hundreds of protesters tried to storm the U.S. base, said Ghulam Nabi Malakhail, a provincial police chief. When warning shots failed to deter them, police shot into the crowd, killing four and wounding 11, he said.
Flying rocks injured eight police and one Afghan soldier, he said....
Wednesday's riot erupted despite an appeal from Afghanistan's top Islamic organization, the Ulama Council, for an end to the violence.
"Islam says it's all right to demonstrate but not to resort to violence. This must stop," senior cleric Mohammed Usman told The Associated Press. "We condemn the cartoons but this does not justify violence. These rioters are defaming the name of Islam."
TEHRAN, Feb 8 (Reuters) Demonstrators angered by European cartoons depicting the Prophet Mohammad and by London's hostility to Iran's nuclear programme pelted the British embassy in Tehran with stones today.
The crowd smashed several windows and chanted ''Death to Britain'' and ''We are willing to sacrifice our lives for the Prophet Mohammad''. Some of the protesters tried to charge the embassy's main gate, but a cordon of police drove them back.
''We are here to protest Britain's role in sending us to the UN Security Council. We must defend our right to nuclear technology,'' said protester Mohammad Ali, 32.
"The nation must rage in anger. It is told that Imam Al-Shafi' said: 'Whoever was angered and did not rage is a jackass.' We are not a nation of jackasses. We are not jackasses for riding, but lions that roar. We are lions that zealously protect their dens, and avenge affronts to their sanctities. We are not a nation of jackasses. We are a nation that should rage for the sake of Allah, His Prophet, and His book. We are the nation of Muhammad, and we must never accept the degradation of our religion. [...]
"We say to those Europeans: We can get by without you, but you cannot get by without us. We can get by without your products. We will buy from China, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Malaysia, from the Asian countries. We will say what King Faysal - may he rest in peace - said in 1973, in the days of the petroleum war. He said to them: We can get by without the petrol, and return to our days of yore. We will make do with milk and dates. We will drink the milk of our camels, and eat the dates from our palm trees. King Faysal said this when there was a threat to Arab honor. It is all the more true when there is a threat to our Islamic honor, to our prophets, and our religion."

ABU HAMZA AL-MASRI, who was jailed for seven years yesterday for inciting murder and racial hatred, preached his message of violence to three of the July 7 London suicide bombers.

The Times has learnt that Mohammad Sidique Khan, Shehzad Tanweer and Jermaine Lindsay, who detonated rucksack bombs on London Tube trains, visited Finsbury Park mosque where Abu Hamza taught that Muslims were obliged to kill unbelievers to defend Islam.

Khan and Tanweer heard the cleric’s sermons inside the North London mosque. They and Lindsay were also among crowds that heard Abu Hamza preach on the street after the building was closed in a police raid in 2003.

The link between Abu Hamza, 47, and the bombers, who killed 52 people and themselves, raises a possible new explanation for the timing of the attacks.

On the morning of July 7 Abu Hamza was in the dock at the Old Bailey about to stand trial. But his case was postponed for six months. It resumed last month, concluding when a jury of seven men and five women returned unanimous guilty verdicts on eleven of fifteen charges.

Abu Hamza, who refused to recognise the court because it did not administer Islamic law, remained seated as the verdicts were delivered. Sentencing him, Mr Justice Hughes said: “You used your authority to legitimise anger and to encourage your audiences to believe that it gave rise to a duty to murder.

“You commended suicide bombing, you encouraged them to kill in the cause you set out for them.” He added that the radical imam had “created a real danger to the lives of innocent people in different parts of the world”.

The judge said that in handing down a seven-year sentence he was aware that upon release Abu Hamza was likely to be rearrested and extradited to the United States where he faces serious terrorist charges, including conspiracy to take hostages.

Abu Hamza was led away to begin his sentence at Belmarsh high-security jail in southeast London.

Mudassar Arani, Abu Hamza’s solicitor, said that her client was “a prisoner of faith” who believed that he had been subjected to “a slow martyrdom”.

The charges against Abu Hamza, a father of seven, were based on hours of videotapes of his sermons. He urged training for holy war, told congregations that the Holocaust and Hitler were sent from God to punish the Jews and repeatedly urged the killing of kuffars (non-believers). “There is no drop of liquid that is loved by Allah more than the liquid of blood,” he preached.

Abu Hamza, whose appearance made him a hero to his followers - he lost his hands and an eye to a landmine in Afghanistan - also taught that suicide bombing was legitimate and that “martyrs” would be rewarded in paradise. Among the hundreds of potential terrorists who passed through Finsbury Park was Khan, 30, the ringleader of the 7/7 bombers, who first went to the mosque in in 2002. He returned several times with Tanweer and the pair slept the night in the building.

Lindsay, 19, first heard the cleric speak during his street sermons which became a rallying point for young Muslim radicals from around the country.

Detectives are still examining surveillance footage to establish if Hasib Hussain, the fourth 7/7 bomber, was ever in the crowds at Finsbury Park.

Abu Hamza’s lawyers made a last-ditch attempt to have the trial stopped yesterday because of the row over newspaper cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad. Within minutes of the judge rejecting that application the jury returned unanimous guilty verdicts on six charges of soliciting murder and three of inciting race hate.

The jury also convicted the preacher of possessing offensive tapes with the intention of distributing them. More than 3,000 recordings were found in his home in West London. He was also found guilty of a charge under the Terrorism Act of possessing an item of use to terrorists, the Encyclopaedia of Afghani Jihad.

But he was acquitted on three charges of soliciting murder and one of stirring up racial hatred.

AMERICA will use phone tap evidence gathered by Britain seven years ago to try to jail Abu Hamza al-Masri for life on terrorist offences.

Bugged conversations between the radical imam and the leader of a gang that kidnapped 16 Western tourists in Yemen are banned in the British courts. Yet the same wiretap material, amassed by British Intelligence, will be central to the case against Abu Hamza if he is extradited to America, The Times has been told.

Scotland Yard and the Crown Prosecution Service faced mounting criticism yesterday for delaying action against Abu Hamza, who was jailed for seven years on Tuesday for soliciting murder and inciting racial hatred.

Last night David Blunkett, the former Home Secretary, suggested that the police, MI5 and the CPS could have acted earlier to seize the cleric. He claimed that they rejected his warnings because they feared it would trigger a race crisis.

Writing in The Sun, Mr Blunkett said: “So much for those in the security services who told me when I was Home Secretary that I was exaggerating the threat and the closure of the Finsbury Park mosque where he preached his evil message would be a ‘massive overreaction’.

There was a deep reluctance to act on the information coming out of Abu Hamza’s own mouth. And some in the police and security services did not want to believe how serious it all was.”

“I was watching Boris Johnson’s BBC2 TV programme The Dream of Rome this evening, marvelling at his re-invention in yet another new guise as telly presenter, when I nearly fell out of my armchair having heard him say that the Christians who martyred themselves for their faith under the Romans were the equivalent of modern Islamic suicide bombers. What astounding moral illiteracy. The Christians were real martyrs; that is, they were killed, or sometimes actively sought their own killing, for their faith. The Islamic suicide bombers are mass murderers; they kill others for their faith. The Islamic suicide bombers use their bodies as lethal weapons to do mass murder. That is not martyrdom but homicide.
“Shouldn’t the Tories’ higher education spokesman know the difference?”
That this same fellow used to edit The Spectator of all things makes this particularly disheartening… If we can’t count self-proclaimed conservatives to know a little something about history, and about the dangers of glib cultural relativsm, where are we to look?

Scotland Yard said a decision not to arrest protesters was taken because of public order fears. It confirmed that police had received more than 100 complaints from the public about the protesters’ behaviour.

On Friday 500 demonstrators marched from Regent’s Park Mosque to the Danish embassy in Knightsbridge to protest at the publication of “blasphemous” cartoons in a Danish newspaper, and subsequently in other countries and on the BBC. Yesterday, more than 1,000 demonstrators staged a second protest outside the embassy. The only arrests made were of two men found carrying cartoons of Mohammed. Police said they had been detained “to prevent a breach of the peace”. On Friday police provided a motorcycle and helicopter escort for the protesters. Video cameras recorded the events.

The Tory call for action is in stark contrast to the response from Jack Straw, the Foreign Secretary, who blamed foreign newspapers for stirring up the row by publishing the cartoons. He said: “Re-publication of the cartoons has been unnecessary, it has been insensitive, it has been disrespectful and it has been wrong.” But the Tories defended the right of editors to publish them. Dominic Grieve, the shadow attorney general, said: “From what we know about the cartoons it is understandable that they have caused offence. “However, the decision as to whether to publish or not is one of taste and decency that should rightly be taken by newspaper editors, broadcasters and their owners and is not one for government….

As the clamour for action grew, police sources said there were no arrests on Friday because of fears of a riot. A senior Scotland Yard officer said: “We have to take the overall nature of the protesters into account. If they are overheated and emotional we don’t go in…..

Me quedo anonadada…

Denmark’s role in pioneering and promoting “alternative” energy technology would for conspiracy theorists be an additional motive for Saudi bullying (lots of Danish electricity demand is supplied by wind energy).

Note that South Park has portrayed Mohammed in it’s episode Super Best Friends recently. South Park has been accused of defiling the “virgin” Mary as recently as December 2005 but there have been no burnings of US embassies by outraged Catholics, Lutherans and Anglicans.

British police need political authorization to act against Muslim lawbreakers: “Protesters who carried placards at the weekend demonstrations in London calling for the beheading of people who insulted Islam, and who shouted terrorist slogans, could be prosecuted for incitement to murder, government sources said yesterday. Charles Clarke, Downing Street and other ministers sent out strong signals to the police and prosecuting authorities to take appropriate action against the demonstrators. Ministers and opposition politicians refrained from joining criticism of the police for failing to arrest people on the spot in the protests at the Danish cartoons. But, while insisting that they would not interfere with the operational independence of the police, they left the authorities in no doubt that they expected action to be taken”.

Keith Burgess Jackson comments on Childish Leftists : “I got to wondering what leftist intellectuals think about the violence being perpetrated by Muslims in various parts of the world. After all, leftists profess to care about people. Won’t they condemn it in no uncertain terms? Brian Leiter has five guest-bloggers, any one of whom could post something about the violence. Alas, nobody has. William Edmundson, Ph.D., J.D., has a really neat post about the Super Bowl and beer. I went to Crooked Timber. I found only one post, and I don’t know what to make of it. I read the hundred or so comments. Perhaps I’m not getting it, but most of the commenters seem to think the violence is funny. Either that or they’re using humor to evade responsibility. Many leftists don’t know what to make of the Muslim violence. To condemn it would be to take a stand, and that seems so, well, grown-up and old-fashioned. The violence can’t be blamed on President Bush, or you can be sure the Left would be all over this issue. Leftists hate Christianity, since they view it as an oppressor religion, but they refuse to say anything even remotely critical about Islam or Muslims, perhaps because that would make them (the critics) seem imperialistic. Better to joke about the violence. Better to retreat into irony and sarcasm. To take a stand would require careful thought and moral backbone, neither of which is conspicuous by its presence among leftists.[…]

Newslinker asks: Why isn’t anyone talking about what Islamists did to images of Budda back in 2001? No Buddhists firebombed or beheaded people in retaliation of the desecration of images of their guru? FLASHBACK from March 2001: “Ignoring an international outcry, Afghanistan’s puritanical Taliban Islamic militia began demolishing statues across the country on Thursday, including two towering ancient stone Buddhas”.

Chris Brand hace referencia a otra noticia aparecida en The Guardian:

{An imam at the Omari Mosque in Gaza City told 9,000 worshippers that the people behind the drawings should have their heads cut off. ‘If they want a war of religions, we are ready,’ Hassan Sharaf, an imam in Nablus, said in his sermon. In Ramallah, protesters burnt a Danish flag, chanting: ‘Bin Laden our beloved, Denmark must be blown up.’ 6th February brought Muslim-on-Muslim killing as Afghan police fired on crowds of thousands of enraged religionists, of whom four died.}

{The Muslim protests were highly ironical, partly in using so much violence to contest their religion being portrayed as violent, and partly because Islam is a clear world leader in violence against other faiths – having from 1998 to 2003 killed 10,000 Christians in Indonesia alone and destroyed ancient Buddhist monuments in Afghanistan.}

Premier Peter Beattie has strongly supported freedom of speech after a second Queensland newspaper published a cartoon of the Prophet Mohammed. The Rockhampton Morning Bulletin today joined Brisbane’s Courier-Mail in publishing one of 12 cartoons first printed in Denmark and which have sparked a violent backlash across the Muslim world. Any depiction of Mohammed is considered blasphemous and banned in Arab countries, although not in some non-Arab Islamic countries. But Mr Beattie said he felt strongly about freedom of the press in Australia. “I strongly support their right to publish these cartoons,” Mr Beattie said. “For someone who is committed to multiculturalism, I just say to our Muslim community with whom I have a good relationship, that our way, the Australian way is the right to freedom of expression and the right to be critical in a cynical way and that is the strength of our democracy. “Nobody is off limits. I am not off limits. Jesus Christ is not off limits. No one’s off limits and we all know that.” Mr Beattie, himself the subject of many a cartoonist’s barbed hand, said he had often seen anti-Christian depictions printed in the press.
